Last Day in Savannah

We always wait till the last minute to cram in all the things we did not get around to doing when we are in Savannah. Today, it was to Tybee Beach for a couple of hours...we visited the new Bohemian Hotel on River Street, very swank and extraordinary...at ate Wassau Sound, our favorite restaurant with a local chef who managed to make sweet potato grits to go with the fresh grouper—yum, yum, yum! Now I have to hit Savannah Candy Kitchen so I can bring Christina, Grant, Avery, Ella, and Evan a treat to eat from the old-fashioned penny candy part of that delightful store where you can see saltwater taffy being made. It seems like I've forgotten something? Oh, yes: to clean up, wash and iron, and pack. Maybe tomorrow?

Savannah Sundays

Yesterday we attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Savannah, founded by John Wesley, on lovely Telfair Square. This church was established in 1848 and has quite a history. Because of a serious arson fire, during which a Savannah fireman died (and the arsonist was never found)—it is still an official Crime Scene. No, we don't have yellow DO NOT CROSS tape around the sanctuary, but we do have a gigantic organ that can blow the Spanish Moss right off the trees when the doors are open! (Hey, I'm not kidding!) Question: What do people do after church on Sunday in Savannah? Answer: Eat seafood, of course!

The Blue Door in Savannah

We are in lovely Savannah, Georgia! This is the front of our town home here. The Blue Door Press is one of my imprints. So is Savannah City Press; you can visit that website at www.savannahcitypress.com. It’s a perfect night here with a full moon coming up over Savannah River. I know you know that Johnny Mercer wrote Moon River here in Savannah! A full moon and a “fat” (or larger than normal) high tide really brings the boaters out. We ate at Bonna Bella’s which is out on a tidal creek through the marsh. Writers need inspiration and nothing inspires me more than shrimp and grits, key lime pie, a little wine, the water, the moon, and Papa making me laugh!

Follow Mimi and Papa on a research trip!

Ok, one and all, I hope you'll follow Carole Marsh/Mimi and Bob/Papa on our journey to Savannah and Charleston during these hot Dog Days (or is it Hot Dog days?) while I am researching and writing my new Real Kids/Real Places mystery—The "First Shot of the Civil War!" Fort Sumter Mystery, set in Charleston, South Carolina. Today we drove from Peachtree City to Savannah, leaving town as we passed some sad faces heading back to the city TO START SCHOOL! Aw, kids, it won't be that bad! However, glad I am headed to the beach! Bob and I have a home in Savannah's historic district. Each trip down is different: this time the tobacco has turned bright yellow and its lop-eared leaves are a tad droopy. Too bad there is not a great use for tobacco instead of for smoking. DO NOT SMOKE! I am going to experiment to see if I can make paper out of it! We also saw corn as high as an elephant's eye, and cotton plants on guard against boll weevils! Soon they will get little red blooms then white cotton bolls that look like snow. Ok, we're here, sated on South Georgia barbecue and swait tay (sweet tea) and as you can see, first thing I do is...blog to you!
